Basic Information of Crayford

Crayford is a town in the London Borough of Bexley, England. It forms part of the historic county of Kent. The town lies approximately 12 miles (19 km) east of Charing Cross in a meander of the River Cray, which flows from north to south.
Crayford was first recorded in 1032 as Credefort, meaning the ford where crayfish were found. The ford is still there, just south of the junction of Upper Wickham Lane and the A2 road. The town grew up on the banks of a ford where a road crossed the Cray. It shares the name with other towns in England including Crayford in Kent, Croydon and Crays Hill in Essex, and is known locally by the nickname of "Cray".
The original settlement was on the east side of the river, but in the late 1800s, it began to expand westwards and now covers most of the north-eastern side of the river. The town has formed part of Greater London since 1965 and is identified in the London Plan as one of the capital's metropolitan centres.
Crayford is best known as the home of the Vauxhall Motors car factory, which was located on the southwest side of the town from 1920 to 2002. The factory was demolished in 2003 and replaced by housing.
